Increasing Seismic Activity

Is seismic activity increasing? Seismic activity has three categories; earth quakes, earth moment and volcanic activity. Let’s start with earthquakes. Below is a table of all the earth quake activity in the last decade. There is no clear indication that earth quake activity is increasing. However if one study earth quake activity below magnitude 5, we can see a clear rise in earth quake activity. This could be an indication of bigger stronger quakes in the future since small quakes normally occur before large earthquakes. This however is purely speculation.

If one study earthquake activity over the last decade in the USA, one can see a very slight rise in earth quake activity below magnitude 5. This could be an indication that bigger quakes could be following in the future but ones again it is purely speculation.

There is no clear indication that earthquake activity is increasing. However if one look at earth's geological pass massive earth moments have occurred in the pass and will occur again in the future.

Revering to the graph below. There is a very clear indication that volcano activity is increasing world wide. The USGS says this increase can be contributed to the fact that there are more people living on the planet today then there where years ago and this is why it appears that there is an increase in volcanic activity because there are more people that can observe volcanic activity. This statement however does not hold much water since there are volcano observers whom have claimed that even is the last decade volcanic activity has still increase. In earth’s geological history it had periods which where a lot more volcanic active then earth is today and if it has happened in the past is will happen again. To make things on the volcanic front even worse NASA has detected that the ocean bed is heating up. This is not good news, since this could be an indication that the earth is heating up below. If the earth is heating up below, the magma below the earth crust will expand. All this extra magma will be looking for a way out and will result in volcanic eruptions. Resent earth studies have indeed establish that volcanic activity has increase with 300 present over the last 13 000 years.

Volcanoes

Seismic activity also includes earth moment, although most earth movement is associated with earthquakes, earth movement can also so occur with out any quaking event. Examples of earth movement are the sinking of islands, cities, sink holes and weight displacement. Examples of islands that have sunk or are sinking are: Tonga group, Carteret Islands, Sundarbans, Examples of sinking cities are: Venice, New Orleans, Matsu Temple. Examples of sink hole are: Fairbanks in Alaska, all over Florida USA, Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Examples of weight displacement are: the melting of thousands of tons of ice all around the Polar Regions.

Does climate have a effect on seismic activity? Most earth movement like weight displacement and the sinkholes in Alaska is created by climate change. Will there be an increase of seismic activity in 2012?

Rating: High probability

Reason for rating: Climate change is driving earth movement and is showing no signs of slowing down. Whether we will have large amounts of earthquake activity and volcanic activity in 2012 remains to be seen but the possibility is always there.
