What is magnetic pole shift? Magnetic pole shift is when the magnetic north pole moves from the northern hemisphere down to the southern hemisphere. This happens on an average interval of 300 000years. The last Magnetic Pole reversal was 780 000years ago.
Is magnetic pole reversal deadly? No it is not. No mass extinction events have been found to match magnetic pole reversal periods. Neither has any asteroid, meteor or comet impacts been found which correlate with these periods. Magnetic pole reversals are also very irregular, which mean that no orbiting planet could be responsible for magnetic pole reversals. Unlike many people believe the earth also do not change its orbital direction, we know this because the sun has a magnetic pole reversal every 11years and the sun does not change its rotation direction during its pole reversal. The only danger magnetic pole reversals pose to us is during the period leading up to the magnetic pole reversal it self. Before the earths magnetic poles became reversed, earth’s magnetosphere weakens. As earths magnetosphere weakens more radiation from the sun and open space enters the earth’s atmosphere. This can lead to cancer and it worse case scenarios even mutations. It is not just the radiation that can become a problem. Are we entering a period of magnetic pole reversal? Yes we are. The earth’s magnetosphere has weakened with 10% in the last 150years. More evidence that we are currently entering a period of pole reversal can be found in South America where the magnetic field are currently moving from south to north and not from north to south like everywhere else in the world. The facts that we have not had a magnetic pole reversal in the last 780 000years are also an indication that we should have a pole reversal in the nearby future. Scientist speculates that magnetic pole reversal can take thousands of years, but if the sun is any indication, a magnetic pole reversal could happen with in a much shorter period. Reason for rating: Even thou we are entering a period of magnetic pole reversal, there is just not enough evidence that it will take place in 2012. Even thou some many argue that a gigantic solar storm in 2012 could lead to a magnetic pole reversal, there just are not enough evidence to support their claims at this point in time.
